The 1st STEREO Reissue Of Candy – Lee Morgan

This is taken from the liner notes of Blue Note Last Reissue Part 4 by Toshiba EMI Japan in 1990.

CANDY/LEE MORGAN by Makoto Goto (Jazz Critic)

Among the Morgan's six 1500 Blue Note albums/reissues, you would notice how he would improve session after session. This Candy is not only one of his best albums, but also one of the best trumpet quartet albums.

It was already released as CD in STEREO and Toshiba EMI used the STEREO master. They used the same STEREO master tape to reissue it as LP this time and this is the 1st ORIGINAL STEREO version of Candy ever released in the world. Please nite that in 1969, Sunset Records in the US reissued the STEREO version but they used a different jacket design and title (All The Way).

As I was listening to the tracks, apart from Candy, the other tracks are the same as MONO version. With Candy, the ending theme is AABA and different from the MONO version. I assume, with STEREO, since the part in between the 2nd A and B is not that good, they didn't take that in MONO. Anyway, Morgan's trumpet is really sound and clear in STEREO all through.

This ORIGINAL STEREO reissue of Candy by Toshiba EMI in 1991 is not known among the Jazz collectors in the world. It is the same as BLP 1568 Hank Mobley ORIGINAL STEREO reissue by the same Toshiba EMI in 1990.
Candy was recorded in 1958 and Mobley's BLP 1568 in 1957. That is the time Rudy Van Gelder started experimenting recording sessions in STEREO.  I don't think they (Toshiba EMI Japan) were able to acquire the original master at that time, but still, the sound quality is not that bad. by Takashi
